A bridal mini can be tiny without being simple.
The Remi is proof.
Built from vintage French bobbin lace over a sheer tan illusion foundation, Remi is a bridal mini dress constructed around an actual corset. Not a stretch bodice with boning sewn into the seams. Not a decorative lace up back added to make something look corseted.
The dress is structured from the inside out.
There are individually constructed corset panels, boning, a rounded basque waist, a lace up back, sheer paneling through the skirt, and two separate layers of fringe designed to move when you do.
It is one of the more technically complicated minis we make.
It also happens to look like something you should probably be dancing in.
A Bridal Mini Built Like a Corset
Corset has become a pretty loose word in fashion.
A lot of dresses are called corset dresses because they have visible boning or a lace up back.
That is not quite the same thing.
The Remi bodice is built with individually shaped panels and boning that create structure through the waist and torso.
That internal construction is what gives the dress its shape.
The rounded basque waist drops lower at center front before curving upward toward the hip, creating a dramatic break between bodice and skirt.
Then the lace up back allows the bodice to be adjusted through the bust and waist.
The goal is not just to make the dress tight.
It is to create shape.
That distinction matters, especially in a very short dress where there is not a lot of fabric below the waist to balance everything out.
Why Remi Has a Sheer Illusion Foundation
Under the vintage lace is a sheer tan illusion lining.
We wanted the foundation to almost disappear against the body.
The effect is less traditional bridal lining and more dancer inspired.
The structure is there.
You just do not immediately see all of it.
That illusion foundation continues through the skirt, allowing the vintage lace and corset paneling to sit against the body without putting an opaque ivory layer behind everything.
It gives Remi the barely there quality we wanted while still giving the garment the support it needs.
For brides looking for a sheer bridal mini dress, this is an important distinction.
Sheer does not necessarily mean unstructured.
In Remi, the transparency and the corsetry are working together.
The Vintage French Bobbin Lace
The lace is a huge part of why Remi exists.
We work heavily with vintage textiles at South of West, but every lace behaves differently.
Remi is made from vintage French bobbin lace with a dense cotton feel and graphic patterning that holds its shape beautifully over the corset.
Because the textile is vintage, each dress will have some natural variation.
The exact placement of motifs can change.
The tone can vary slightly.
One section of lace may be more open than another.
We do not try to erase those differences.
They are part of what makes working with vintage textiles worthwhile.
If you want to understand more about why vintage lace wedding dresses are rarely identical, we wrote an entire guide on how South of West designs with vintage and antique lace.
The short version is simple.
We are working with a finite material.
When it is gone, it is gone.
Why the Skirt Curves Up at the Hip
The Remi skirt is not gathered.
That matters.
Instead, it is fitted close to the body and shaped dramatically upward at the side hips before dropping lower at the center front and center back.
Think of it almost like a deep curve.
That shape exposes more of the leg at the sides while keeping a little more length through the center.
Visually, it makes the legs look extremely long.
It also gives the fringe room to do what it is supposed to do.
The result is much more sculpted than a traditional short bridal skirt.
For anyone comparing different bridal mini dress silhouettes, pay attention to where the hem actually lands around the entire body.
A straight hem and a curved hem can feel completely different even if their center front measurements are similar.
The Fringe Is Built in Two Layers
Remi has two separate layers of fringe.
The first is a long layer falling from the waist and draping down over the fitted skirt.
The second is shorter and follows the curved hemline.
Standing still, the fringe softens the structure of the corset and skirt.
Moving is where it really starts making sense.
The two lengths move independently, which gives the dress a lot more dimension than a single row of fringe would.
That was intentional.
A reception wedding dress should look good in photographs.
But it should also look better once the music starts.
Why Fit Starts With the Hips
This is probably the most important thing to understand when choosing a Remi size.
Size the dress to your hip measurement first.
The skirt is fitted and does not have the same adjustability as the corset.
The bodice does.
Once the skirt fits properly through the hips, the lace up corset can then be adjusted through the bust and waist.
That gives some flexibility through the upper body depending on where you fall within the size range.
It is one of the advantages of a true lace up corset.
But the skirt still has to fit.
If you are between sizes, your hip measurement should lead the decision.
For brides trying on Remi in person, we can help with sizing during a private bridal appointment at our Oceanside studio.
Who Is The Remi For?
We designed Remi as a bridal mini.
What that means is up to you.
She works as a second look wedding dress after a full ceremony gown.
She works for a reception.
A rehearsal dinner.
A courthouse wedding.
An elopement.
A very small wedding.
Or the entire wedding if you were never interested in wearing a gown in the first place.
There is no rule that says a mini has to wait until after dinner.
We wrote more about choosing a short reception dress in our San Diego bride's guide to bridal minis and second looks.
The useful question is not whether a mini is bridal enough.
It is whether it makes sense for the way you actually want to get married.
Remi Versus a Traditional Bridal Mini
A lot of bridal minis get their impact from embellishment.
Beading.
Bows.
Feathers.
Appliqué.
Remi gets hers mostly from construction.
The corsetry shapes the body.
The vintage lace creates texture.
The sheer foundation creates contrast.
The curved hem changes the proportions.
The fringe creates movement.
There is a lot happening, but very little of it is decorative just for the sake of decoration.
That is why the dress can feel both ornate and almost stripped down at the same time.
Is Remi Comfortable Enough for a Reception?
A structured dress should still let you move.
The lace up back allows the bodice to be adjusted rather than forcing the body into one fixed circumference.
The skirt stays close to the body without being gathered or bulky.
And there is no train to manage.
If you are choosing a second wedding dress for dancing, those things matter more than people sometimes realize.
Try sitting.
Walk quickly.
Raise your arms.
Dance badly.
A reception dress has a job to do.
Looking good standing still is only part of it.
What Shoes Work With Remi?
Almost anything, depending on what you want the dress to become.
Cowboy boots push it western.
A sharp heel makes it feel much more fashion.
Red heels can make the entire look feel less traditionally bridal.
A simple barely there sandal lets the lace and fringe do most of the work.
The high side hem also means shoes are very visible.
So unlike a floor length gown, they are not an afterthought.
If you already have the shoes, bring them to your fitting.
Why We Made Remi
South of West has always been interested in the space between bridal and everything else.
A wedding dress can be romantic without being precious.
A corset can be technically complicated and still feel effortless.
A vintage textile can become something completely different from what it was originally made to be.
And a wedding dress can be very, very short.
Remi brings all of those things together.
Vintage lace.
Real corsetry.
Sheer construction.
A sculpted mini skirt.
Fringe that does not really make sense until you see it moving.
It is a lot of dress packed into very little dress.
You can shop The Remi Mini, explore our full collection of bridal mini dresses, or book an appointment at the South of West studio in Oceanside to try her on in person.
Some dresses are made for walking down the aisle.
Remi was made for whatever happens after.
